The alchemy of

Anthropology, Art,

Love, and Good Cooking

The Brown Books refer to a series of brown faux leather notebooks, with a wrap clip, produced by Paperblanks, each of 144 pages long, in which I have written and drawn since 2005 (I think?).  The first in the series was a mammoth task to write down things I'd discovered, mentally played around with, and was generally an exercise in mental self-exploration.  I was rather ill at the time - my primary brush with heart disease - and I needed to somehow write a summation of what I felt and thought.

It was at same time that I started using TomBow pens, and they dictated that I chose Paperblanks notebooks with robust plain paper, so that there was minimal bleed of ink from one page to its reverse side.

The second book explored the symbolic and mythic lore of snakes, dragons and similar.  It was completed 2007. It is significant in that a four-page cartoon at the end prefigured Senex, a project worthy of it's own page.

The book 'Freud' is a book of visual jokes, loosely based on a journey with a caricature of me walking through various surreal situations. It hasn't progressed very far, but it's there, bubbling away in the background.

Paperblanks plain (not lined) notebooks are always welcome as birthday presents!
