One of the Brown Books, Senex (Old man) began life as a four page cartoon of Senex at the end of the snake book, with Senex seeking healing at an Asceplion, a temple of healing and sacred sleep.

Well, Senex, the book, has a format of incorporating text into the pictures, comic-book style.  usually the text is a Latin or Greek tag, with a translation.  The story has evolved all on its own.  The main strands include, Senex sets out, meets Hecate, is guided to Asceplius's temple, prepares himself for sacred sleep, in a trance sails up the Nile, boards for the Levant and enters Babylon through the Ishtar Gate.

Then there is a cut to a Roman patrol, ambushed by Scythians, with Senex (now a young man) the sole survivor. As he wanders, dazed, away from the battle, he comes across a sacred grove and a dead princess.  He takes a pendant from the corpse's throat, and as he gazes at the jewel, houris or sirens surround him.  All takes a twist for the horrible when the nymphs coalese into a slavering monster.  At that point, Senex is jolted awake. Riding away, Senex knows where to go, and enters a subterranean temple of Mithras.

There is a Interludus Comicus (see next page) as the mysteries are performed.  After the mysteries, Senex rides out to an underground cell, is transformed by alchemy, is propelled to witness the events after the battle of Actium (eg death of Cleopatra) and a further wierd amalgam of alchemical exploits... That's the story so far.
